Copa Airlines carried out a commercial demonstration flight with sustainable fuel

Copa Airlines, a subsidiary of Copa Holdings, SA {NYSE: CPA} and a member of the Star Alliance global airline network, conducted a commercial demonstration flight with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). ).

Flight CM303 to Panama (PTY) was part of an aviation industry initiative, organized by IATA and Boeing, to use SAF, or sustainable aviation fuel, on select flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), California. This initiative reaffirms the commitment of the aviation industry and Copa Airlines to sustainability and the goal of being carbon neutral by 2050.

Supplied by the company World Energy, who are pioneers in the generation of renewable energy and have the only SAF refinery in America, located in Paramount, California, Copa acquired 39,000 pounds of SAF for flight CM303 on June 7, 2022, operated by a Boeing 737-MAX9 model aircraft on the Los Angeles (LAX) – Panama (PTY) route. As a result of this initiative, which was carried out in conjunction with seven other airlines during the Summit of the Americas, a reduction in emissions of 472,500 pounds of CO2 is reflected.

This flight takes place within the framework of various meetings held by the commercial aviation industry, with the participation of Copa and other airlines, to define strategies that contribute to the goal of achieving zero net emissions in commercial aviation by 2050.

Achieving the ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2050 will require the coming together of the entire industry, including governments, regulators, manufacturers and suppliers, to ensure the supply and availability of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), the efficient use of airspace and investment in new aviation technologies, among others
