Virgin Voyages celebrates the grand opening of the new Terminal V at PortMiami

Virgin Voyages, Richard Branson’s new cruise line, celebrated the highly anticipated opening of Terminal V at PortMiami. Sir Richard Branson, along with Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin were part of the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The inauguration represents an important milestone in the history of the brand and from there the Scarlet Lady ship will depart for the first time.

“Coming to this beautiful new terminal and seeing Scarlet Lady at her home port here in Miami has been an incredible experience. The Virgin Voyages team has created an impressive building that lives up to our commitment to be better stewards of the earth with its LEED Gold certification,” said Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group.

Terminal V, an impressive three-story building on the northwest corner of PortMiami, brings even more magic to the city with its unobstructed views of the Biscayne Bay, downtown and Edgewater skyline. Yesterday, a little over a year after the groundbreaking ceremony, Virgin Voyages invited local city officials and brand partners to celebrate the grand opening of the 132,000-square-foot structure.

“We’ve always strived to make the ordinary extraordinary, and Terminal V gives us a greater opportunity to elevate the sailors’ experience from the moment they see the AHOY sign to the moment they disembark. The Scarlet Lady deserves a home as beautiful as she is, and we can’t wait for our sailors to begin their journey in Terminal V,” said Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin.

The geometric design, a palm grove where the land meets the sea, was inspired by Miami’s iconic palm trees and the historic origins of the area (previously used to harvest coconuts). The concept was developed by award-winning global architecture and landscape firm Arquitectonica and built from the ground up by Suffolk Construction. Terminal V’s rooftop resembles the edges of a canopy of palm trees with angular cutouts that allow natural light to pass through. Surrounded by more than 1,000 palm trees, Terminal V features soaring floor-to-ceiling windows, natural skylights, and lush interior landscaping that offers boaters a big, warm welcome on their journey.

Taking further inspiration from the brand’s design ethos of “Modern Romance of Sailing”, Terminal V’s interiors give a nod to mid-century design and are punctuated with emerald and ruby hues. The space also incorporates changing LED screens, local artwork from the nonprofit Art in Public Places, and an outdoor deck for sailors to enjoy the sea breeze before boarding. Outside, a wide sign that reads “Navigate the Virgin’s Way” and dramatic red lighting reflect the city lights.

Every Sailor is treated like a RockStar on Virgin Voyages, but for Sailors who have booked suite accommodations, they will gain access to VIP entry to Terminal V, expedited security screening and an exclusive departure lounge. The new cruise terminal also features a special crew-only lounge where the Virgin Voyages team can relax, further demonstrating the brand’s commitment to creating the best gig for its employees. Completing the design are designated drop-off, ride-sharing and provisioning areas, all working together to deliver a seamless experience from land to ship.

Terminal V illustrates Virgin Voyages’ commitment to preserving the environment, protecting our oceans and fulfilling its mission to create “Epic Change at Sea for All” as one of the only LEED Gold-certified buildings in PortMiami. Materials were meticulously selected with sustainability in mind, from the color of the pavers at the entrance to the glass. Even the air conditioning and electrical systems were planned to reduce the impact of Terminal V on the planet.

Scarlet Lady, the first ship from Virgin Voyages and winner of Cruise Critic’s “Best New Cruise Ship for 2021” award, will call Terminal V home year-round, while Valiant Lady will join in winter 2022. Both ships will sail a mix of multi-night itineraries to some of the Caribbean’s most compelling destinations, each with a stop at Virgin Voyages’ exclusive Beach Club in Bimini.
